BROOKLYN, NY — An 18-year-old man drowned just off the Coney Island boardwalk, drawing emergency crews to the busy Brooklyn beach.

Police say units responded around 3:10 p.m. Wednesday to the beach near the Cyclone after a lifeguard spotted an 18-year-old man struggling in the water and pulled him out. The man was unconscious and unresponsive, but still alive when rescued by lifeguards.

The teen boy was rushed to Coney Island Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead, police said.

The teen has since been identified as Jun Obas, according to a report by News12 Brooklyn.

Sources close to the investigation told News12 that Obas may have suffered a medical episode before drowning and was pulled from approximately two feet of water. However, the official cause of death is still under investigation.
