Here are the top five stories today in Brooklyn:

  1. On Aug. 21, the NYPD released a video of the suspect behind a violent Brooklyn subway assault that happened on Aug. 20 at the Avenue H station on the Q line in Midwood. The suspect started a verbal argument with the 64-year-old victim, who was walking on the Coney Island-bound platform, then hit him repeatedly in the head with a rock. The victim was in stable condition after being rushed to Maimonides Medical Center. Anyone with information about the attack or the suspect is asked to contact the NYPD. (AMNY)
  2. On Aug. 20, 22-year-old Qiu Rifeng was fatally struck by a vehicle while trying to cross 18th Avenue at 74th Street in Bensonhurst, a little over a block away from his home, on his Hover-1 Journey folding scooter. According to the NYPD, the 23-year-old male driver stayed at the scene and no arrests have been made as of Aug. 21. Rifeng was brought to Maimonides Medical Center with severe head injuries and died of his wounds. According to Crash Mapper, there have been 50 crashes injuring 60 people on the two-block stretch of 18th Avenue between 73rd and the Bay Ridge Parkway over the past decade. (AMNY)
  3. On Aug. 20, three people were stabbed at the corner of 44th Street and Seventh Avenue outside Sunset Park. According to the NYPD, 31-year-old Yenner Rodas had multiple stab wounds to his chest and the shoulder and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The two other victims, a 26-year-old man who was stabbed in the face and a 33-year-old man who was stabbed in the stomach, are in stable condition in the hospital. One local said, "I grew up in Brooklyn, so to me, this is like going back to the '80s." (CBS New York)
  4. The NYPD is searching for the gunman who shot a 37-year-old victim in the leg unprovoked near Ralph Avenue and Saint Johns Place in Crown Heights. The video shows the gunman firing several times and then running away. The victim, who was shot in the leg once, was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover. Anyone with information about the gunman or the attack is asked to contact the NYPD. (CBS New York)
  5. The first vehicle-to-grid (V2G) system on NYC's electricity grid launched last week. The V2G system is starting at Revel rideshare's Red Hook, Brooklyn warehouse. Revel, Fermata Energy, and NineDot Energy are collaborating on the project. (Clean Technica)

  • Tyshawn Baldwin, a 28-year-old from Brooklyn, is facing 17 charges for a suspected hit-and-run in Ridgewood on Aug. 10. He has been charged with assault, reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing of police officers, and other crimes. The hit-and-run injured three pedestrians, including a mother and toddler inside a stroller. (WSOC Charlotte)
  • A verdict is due on Aug. 31 for another retrial of a Brooklyn case worked on by retired NYPD Detective Louis Scarcella, who has been accused of coercing or inducing false confessions and bogus witness identifications in the 1980s and 1990s. (ABC News)
