Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

  1. The supermarket chain Wegmans, with an outpost in The Brooklyn Navy Yard, is being fined $400,000 by the New York Attorney General's Office in the wake of a company-wide data breach. The supermarket is accused of "recklessly" handling personal information of over 3 million customers, and 800,000 New Yorkers. Attorney General Letitia James said, "In the 21st century, there’s no excuse for companies to have poor cybersecurity systems and practices that hurt consumers." (Patch)
  2. Five individuals were arrested for the sale of more than 28 firearms in Brooklyn. The alleged gun traffickers are wanted for selling the AR-15-style assault rifles, along with others, at least two of which were used in deadly shooting incidents in Brooklyn. The guns were sold, many with "defaced serial numbers," between September 2021 and June 2022. (Spectrum News NY1)
  3. The New York Aquarium is set to reopen fully for the first time since Hurricane Sandy. The violent 2012 storm destroyed the aquarium, and it has only been gradually reopening since. The grand reopening will be celebrated with a ceremonial ribbon cutting this morning at 10:30 a.m. (PIX11 New York News)
  4. An elderly man was killed after a violent fight with his cousin. The 72-year-old man was found in his Bed-Stuy apartment with a traumatic head injury. The victim's cousin admitted to having been in a fist fight and was taken into custody by the police. (Yahoo News)
  5. A 22 year old was killed in Brownsville early on Thursday morning. The male victim was found at Newport and Strauss streets with a stab wound to his chest before he was rushed to Brookdale Hospital. As of Thursday morning, no arrests had been made nor suspects named. (Yahoo News)

Are you a Brooklyn resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2 percent when inflation is >3 percent
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164 percent (1995-2021)
