Zoning Board Hearing Set for Hess Station Proposal
Public expected to speak out against gas station.

The public will have an opportunity to voice its opinion to the Smithtown Zoning Board of Appeals Thursday regarding a proposed Hess Station at the corner of Jericho Turnpike and Harned Road in Commack.
The proposal of the Hess Express gas station and convenience store at the busy five-way intersection near the Sunken Meadow Parkway will replace the abandoned Shell station, which has become an eyesore. Hess Express is seeking a zoning change to build the convenience store.
Though the new proposal is similar to the one rejected by the board four years ago, concerns over the blighted appearance of the property have prompted officials to endorse the plans, according to Smithtown Planning Director Frank DeRubeis.

Residents and business owners have spoken out in opposition of the proposal, citing safety and traffic concerns for the high-volume intersection.
The hearing is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Smithtown Senior Citizens Center at 420 Middle Country Rd.
