Firework Ignites In Hand, Injuring Suffolk County Man

The explosion severed two of the man's fingers, police say.

A Suffolk County man was injured Thursday night after a firework ignited in his hands in Wyandanch, NY, according to a police report.

As the report explains, a group of people near AC Auto Repair and Diagnostics, located at 92D Wyandanch Avenue, were using fireworks.

A little after 10:00 p.m., one man, 35, lit a mortar firework, which is meant to detonate in the sky, and it ignited in his hand. The explosion severed two of his right hand's fingers, nearly severed another finger, and left the other finger damaged.

Wyandanch Rescue took him to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.

The Suffolk County Police issued the following reminder: "The use and possession of fireworks—including sparklers—is illegal in Suffolk County. The department wants people to have a safe Fourth of July and encourage people to leave fireworks to the professionals."
