Parliament Place Students Learn About Asian Brush Painting
Third, fourth and fifth graders are taught by a local artist.
Continuing their ongoing relationship with the Huntington Arts Council Journeys Program to bring real-life artists into classrooms, the North Babylon School District Fine Arts Department recently welcomed artist Sung Sook Setton.
Working with third, fourth and fifth-grade students in Renee Blank’s art classes at Parliament Place Elementary School, Setton taught the students East Asian brush painting and Chinese calligraphy. Using traditional brushes, India ink and rice paper, the students created two nature art pieces that were used to kick off their in-class winter landscape project.
“It’s important to widen the students’ horizons in order for them to see what people do around the world in terms of art,” Blank said. “It gives the students a different approach, from the tools that are used to how they hold their brushes.”
