Local High School Hoops Teams Stay Hot

North Babylon boys, girls teams sit in first place in League III.

The boys high school basketball teams for North Babylon and Deer Park remain tied for first place in their respective leagues. The Bulldogs (6-1) are knotted with Riverhead in League III while the Falcons (6-1) are deadlocked with Half Hollow Hills West atop League IV.

North Babylon's Isaiah Moore had the high point mark for his team this past week, as he scored 20 points in the Bulldogs' 63-55 overtime win at Smithtown East. Aaren Edmead had the top performance this past week for Deer Park as he scored 26 points in Deer Park's 78-72 loss Tuesday against Copiague.

On the girls side, North Babylon (7-0) put two victories in the win column. Makeda Nicholas turned in a noteworthy performance with 23 points and 11 rebounds in the Bulldogs 68-59 win at Riverhead on Tuesday.

The Deer Park (4-3) girls hoops team went 1-1 to stay above .500 in League IV play. Nicole Gomez had a big performance for the Falcons with 14 points and 13 rebounds in the team's 56-51 win over Hauppauge on Jan. 10.

Nine Suffolk boys and girls basketball teams have just one loss, creating separation with an eye toward the playoffs. But there's plenty of room for movement.

Long Island Lutheran is the second-ranked squad in the New York State Sportswriters Class AA boys basketball rankings. CI, at No. 13, is Suffolk's best. 

Sachem East is fifth in the latest state Class AA girls basketball rankings while Northport is 20th and Whitman 30th.
