Suffolk Man Shoots Housemate On New Year's Day, Police Say

WYANDANCH, NY — A Wyandanch man has been arrested after police said he shot his housemate on New Year's Day. Steven Merriman, 59, fired at the 36-year-old woman, hitting her in the arm, following an argument around 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, Suffolk County police said.

The house is on Irving Avenue, near Lewis Street. The woman was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for treatment. She was expected to survive her injuries.

Merriman was arrested and charged with assault. More charges are pending against him, police said.

He was to remain jailed overnight and appear in court Thursday in Central Islip.
