Cosmetology Program Launched At Farmingdale High School
Passing students will be eligible to sit for the NYS practical and written examinations to become state-licensed cosmetologists.

FARMINGDALE, NY — Farmingdale High School has launched its new cosmetology program, according to an announcement.
"We are thrilled to officially launch Farmingdale High School's new Cosmetology program!" the district wrote. "This morning, the students were absolutely beaming with excitement, and we can't wait to see all they accomplish."
The two-year program is open to high school juniors and seniors and offers seven elective high school credits.

The Career & Technical Education program prepares students to become New York state-licensed cosmetologists. In New York state, a licensed cosmetologist can provide service to the head, hair, neck, face, scalp and nails.
At the conclusion of the program, successful students will have completed the mandated 1,000 hours required by New York state. They will be eligible to sit for the NYS practical and written examinations to become state-licensed cosmetologists.

State-licensed cosmetologists can provide services such as:
- Hair styling and braiding
- Shampooing
- Cutting hair
- Permanents and relaxing
- Coloring, highlights
- Brows, waxing and tweezing
- Manicures and pedicures
- Facials
- Lashes
- Make-up
- Skin care

In the cosmetology lab, first-year students learn the practical foundations of hair dressing, nail care, make-up and skin care. Students study the complex chemical, anatomical and hygiene practices required in cosmetology. Working on mannequin heads, they practice hair washing, styling and basic cutting techniques. Students learn and practice interacting and managing appointments with clients.
In the cosmetology professional phase, senior students focus on advanced, industry-level salon services such as haircutting, permanent waving, hair coloring, chemical retexturizing, and esthetics, as well as developing professional salon management skills.
This part of the course is designed specifically to sharpen student skills ahead of the New York State
Board practical exam and ensure students complete the 1,000 mandated practical hours.
Specific emphasis is placed on job readiness and New York state licensing exam preparation. At the end of the program, students develop a work resume, gather professional recommendations,
research local job openings and develop a post-graduation career plan.
