Farmingdale School District Announces Proposed Budget for 2015-2016 School Year

The proposed budget stays within the district's specific tax levy cap, officials say.

The Farmingdale School District presented its 2015-2016 proposed budget to the community at the Board of Education’s first special meeting/budget workshop on March 11, 2015. At the workshop, District administration announced that the proposed budget stays within the District’s specific tax levy cap of 1.28 percent based on the formula provided by New York State. The District also detailed a proposition that would establish a reserve fund to support capital needs throughout the District, including roof replacement projects. The proposed budget is intended to meet the Farmingdale community’s needs and expectations as the District continues to offer high-quality academic and extracurricular programs throughout the year.

“Providing students with the highest level of resources to excel in and out of the classroom is our priority, and we feel this year’s proposed budget will accomplish the goal in an efficient manner while being as cost effective as possible,” said Paul Defendini, Farmingdale School District Assistant Superintendent for Business. “The Farmingdale School District is a cornerstone of the Farmingdale community, and we are excited for the possibilities the upcoming school year holds.”

The budget presentation included a detailed explanation of the property tax cap, the revenue needed to support District programs, services and facilities, how state aid is allocated and distributed as well as the purpose of fund balances and reserve. Administration officials also reviewed proposed legislation recommended by New York State Governor Cuomo and its potential impact on future District budgets.

“It is our mission to present the community with as much information as possible so they are well prepared to vote on the budget in May,” continued Mr. Defendini. “The Farmingdale School District will be holding several workshops detailing the various aspects and implications of the proposed budget, and we encourage residents to be involved throughout the process.”

The next Board of Education special meeting/budget workshop will take place on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Howitt Middle School at 8 p.m. For more information, visit the District’s website at www.farmingdaleschools.org.
