Pilot Douses Plane Engine Fire At Republic Airport In East Farmingdale

The engine of a 1977 Piper Warrior began to smoke when a student started it on Tuesday morning, a spokesman said.

EAST FARMINGDALE, NY — A fast-acting pilot swiftly doused a plane fire before it could spread at Republic Airport in East Farmingdale on Tuesday morning.

A student from the Long Island Aviators flight school at Republic Airport started the engine on a 1977 Piper Warrior, which began to smoke at 7:30 a.m., Stephen Canzoneri, a public information officer with the New York State Department of Transportation, told Patch.

The pilot extinguished the fire before the local fire department arrived, according to Canzoneri.

"There were no injuries and there was no impact on airport operations," Canzoneri said.

Republic Airport is owned and operated by the New York State Department of Transportation.
