Ryder Cup Expected To Generate $160 Million For Long Island Economy: Study

The golf tournament takes place from Tuesday to Sunday at Bethpage State Park.

FARMINGDALE, NY — The Ryder Cup is expected to bring a financial windfall to Long Island when the golf tournament takes place at Bethpage State Park.

A study by the Long Island Association (LIA) indicates that the event will generate more than $160 million and up to 1,000 jobs.

With up to 250,000 spectators set to watch the prestigious event from Sept. 23-28, the LIA says local restaurants, retail and local services will be impacted positively with direct spending on tickets, hotels and meals.

Based on historic analysis of the Ryder Cup, 65-70 percent of the attendees will be from other countries and regions in the U.S. They'll all need housing with 16 hotels within 25 miles of Bethpage, All of the hotels nearly sold out with current prices per night of $900-$1,000. While there are numerous nearby Airbnb options, there was an extremely limited availability, except for a three-bedroom home priced at $36,000 for a six-night stay, the LIA said.

The LIA estimates each day's spectator total, with 20,000 expected for Tuesday's practice round. It goes up to 45,000 people at the Bethpage Blackcourse on Saturday and Sunday.

Tournament ticket packages: Packages (including hotel, transportation, tournament tickets, and upgraded food offerings) range from $7,000 to $20,000. The resale market for week-long Ryder Cup passes are being resold for over $6,600, the LIA said.

VegasInsider examined 1,800 accommodations near Bethpage and found a four-night Farmingdale stay (September 25-29) on Booking.com costs on average $2,815, which is 73.10 percent more than the week before the Ryder Cup and 168.1 percent more than the week after the tournament.

The most expensive accommodation option on Booking.com during the Ryder Cup is a three-bedroom apartment 21 miles from Bethpage Black Golf Course for $10,957.

The cheapest accommodation option on Booking.com is a king room in a 2-star motel 7 miles from Bethpage Black Golf Course for $1,431.

Those who get tickets for the Ryder Cup will spend on average $100 per night for dinner and $100 for souvenir merchandise. Hotel stay is expected to average $125 per night and spectators can expect to pay $20 per day for gas, LIA's study suggests.
