FARMINGDALE, NY — Local charities are the unsung heroes of our communities. Nonprofit and not-for-profit organizations strive to create lasting change and positively impact the lives of those around them.

Some people start organizations as a way to cope with grief, some see an issue they want to tackle, and some want to bring lasting change. Sometimes, all those reasons apply.

Patch wants to highlight your local charity and connect it with community members who want to help and do good, so that way, more people can benefit. Here is just one of many charities doing terrific work in your community.

Initially reaching out to family, friends, and community members to help establish the foundation, we are also working with Farmingdale High School to hold an annual wrestling tournament in Sam's name. We anticipate future fundraising events and will provide details once determined.

What inspired you to start your charity?

The unfortunate passing of my son Sam Cullen and high school sweetheart (and soon to be fiancée) Suzie Kedar.

How can people help you accomplish your organization's mission or get involved in events?

Would love for people to show their support by contributing to The Sam Cullen Memorial Foundation so we can move forward and solidify our mission of giving back.

What is the most memorable moment you've had since starting your organization?

The outpouring of love and support since Sam and Suzie's tragic accident has been felt from not only close friends and family, but from all, far and near. The ongoing love and support from his Navy family and the beautiful and touching memorial service held by the Naval Air Station Fleet Readiness Center North West on Whidbey Island.

Establishing this charity will enable us to keep Sam's name alive, and although his life was cut short, this will be his way of giving back to the community and country for years to come.
