Man Airlifted To Hospital After Boat Propeller Injury On Fire Island: Police

A Utah man was airlifted to a hospital from Fire Island after getting hit by a boat propeller on Sunday, according to Suffolk County police.

FIRE ISLAND, NY — A Utah man was airlifted to a hospital from Fire Island after getting hit by a boat propeller on Sunday, according to Suffolk County police.

Police said the man, 18, fell off a boat and was struck by its propeller in Sailers Haven on Sunday afternoon. The boat's operator was backing out a 30-foot aluminum barge at Sailors Haven Boat Basin when the injured man lost his balance and fell off, striking the propeller, police.

The man suffered a leg injury, was removed from the water, and multiple Marine Bureau officers responded, police said.

Officer Joseph Riviello applied two tourniquets to the man’s leg and he was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
