Search Called Off For Missing Person After Boat Sinks

FIRE ISLAND, NY β€” The search for a missing person whose boat sank off Fire Island last week has been officially called off, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed with Patch.

The U.S. Coast Guard utilized two helicopters, one plane, and six different boats of various sizes to search for the missing person. More than 50 people searched 2,000 square miles of the area, officials told Patch.

The search was called off at 11 a.m. on Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

On Wednesday night, the U.S. Coast Guard was alerted when a commercial ship struck and sank the vessel, according to a report received by the U.S. Coast Guard.

However, after arriving at the incident's location, the U.S. Coast Guard only discovered one of two people. The person was rescued at about 7 a.m. on Thursday and taken to a local hospital for non-threatening injuries, officials said.
