Woodhull Students Dive into Hands-On Science Discovery with BOCES Environmental Educators

Woodhull students recently explored Fire Island's shore through an engaging lesson guided by BOCES environmental educators

The natural world became the classroom for fifth and sixth-grade students from Woodhull School in the Fire Island School District, as BOCES environmental educators led a full day of hands-on science discovery along the island’s shoreline. Joining in the adventure were sixth-grade students from Bay Shore Middle School, making the experience both a learning opportunity and also a chance for new friendships to grow.

The day began with a shoreline exploration of Fire Island’s oceanfront, where students observed coastal ecosystems up close, sharing their findings and curiosity about the environment. Through guided exploration, they learned how scientific observation and teamwork reveal the interconnectedness of life along the shore.

Back in the classroom, the learning continued with an interactive study of atoms and molecules, helping students build a strong foundation for the science topics they’ll explore throughout the year. Students used gumdrops and toothpicks to build their own models of chemical elements.

The day concluded with the launch of a year-long terrarium challenge, where students will design, create, and maintain a thriving miniature ecosystem. The project offers students an engaging, hands-on way to experience the principles of life science in real time.

“This program is all about learning science by living it,” said Superintendent,Principal Travis Davey. “By bringing students directly into nature and then connecting those experiences to classroom learning, we’re helping them see how everything—from the tiniest atom to the vast ocean—is connected.”
