Daikin, the global leader in state-of-the-art heating and cooling products, recently presented a $2,000 scholarship to Luis Mejia-Velasquez, a 2023 graduate of Lawrence High School. The award was part of $10,000 in scholarships given to five Long Island high school students as part of the Daikin Science Scholarship program. Now in its fourth year, the Daikin Science Scholarship is offered to graduating seniors in five Nassau County high schools who demonstrate academic excellence in the sciences, technology, or mathematics and pursue one of these majors in their college studies. The scholarships were presented to the students at an awards ceremony held at the Daikin Comfort Design Center in Lynbrook on June 14th.

Luis Mejia-Velasquez will be furthering his studies at Hunter College in New York City, where he will be majoring in health sciences. A student of excellent academic standing, Luis is enrolled in several demanding AP classes, including biology, calculus, and physics, while working in a local CVS as a cashier and stock clerk to help fund his college education. His extracurricular activities include volunteering at local food drives, and as a member of his school’s Gender & Sexualities Alliance to help raise funds and awareness of LGBTQ+ issues. His hobbies include building and repairing computers.

“Daikin greatly values the importance of education and is pleased to provide financial support to the next generation of scientists, engineers, and other professionals who will provide solutions to some of the most pressing global issues we face today and in the future,” said Kim Do, Strategic Marketing Manager, Daikin. “On behalf of everyone at Daikin, we congratulate this year’s Daikin Science Scholarship winners and offer our best wishes for continued success as they begin their higher educational studies.”
