Man Charged In Fatal Nassau Hit-And-Run: Police

A woman crossing the street died when suffering severe head trauma after she was hit by a vehicle, police say.

NORTH LAWRENCE, NY — A Freeport man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a woman in North Lawrence in December, Nassau police said.

Melvin Deleon, 35, was charged with leaving the scene of an incident, police said. His arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday at First District Court, at 99 Main St., Hempstead.

Esmeralda Larios-Perez, 34, of Inwood, was crossing Burnside Avenue, walking northbound at Washington Place when she was struck by Deleon, who failed to stop and sped away around 7:20 p.m. Dec. 12, police said. Larios-Perez suffered severe trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
