Roosevelt Honors Diwali with Art, Stories and Creativity

Second-grade students at Ulysses Byas Elementary School in the Roosevelt School District celebrated Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, on October 21 with a day filled with learning and creativity.

During the celebration, students explored the rich traditions of Diwali by reading cultural stories, creating colorful rangoli art, and designing their own diyas, or oil lanterns. The activities offered students a fun, hands-on opportunity to learn about the significance of light, joy, and togetherness that Diwali represents.

“It was wonderful to see our students so engaged and excited to take part in such a joyous celebration of Diwali,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shawn Wightman. “Celebrations like this help build understanding and respect for the diversity that makes our community so special.”

The event was part of Roosevelt’s ongoing commitment to fostering cultural awareness and creativity among students. By learning about global traditions, students gain a deeper appreciation for the world around them while strengthening the inclusive values at the heart of the Roosevelt community.
