4 Glen Cove High School Grads Earn Thousands In Scholarship Money
Four members of the Glen Cove High School Class of 2020 won $5,000 in scholarship money thanks to a Long Island developer.

GLEN COVE, NY — Four new graduates of Glen Cove High School have been awarded thousands of dollars in scholarship money thanks to a Long Island developer.
RXR Realty on Tuesday announced the winners of the Garvies Point Scholarship. This year’s recipients were Douaa Ahmed, Angela Alvarado, Nicole Khaimov and Megan Fahey. Each will receive $5,000. They were chosen based on academic performance and community involvement, as well as their interest in science, environmental science and marine biology.
Ahmed, 17, held an internship at Garvies Point Museum focusing on coral classification and completed the high school's Advanced Placement, or AP, Environmental Science class. She also participated in the Teen Court Program, played on the lacrosse team, played 2nd violin in the high school concert orchestra, and was a member of the Key Club. Douaa's interest in geology began with her 6th grade teacher and she plans to continue her education in the field of study.

Angela Alvarado, 18, was born in the United States but raised in El Salvador. She returned at age 14, and started learning English. Over the last four years, her English has improved and she’s succeeded academically. Now, Alvarado is preparing for college. Angela is interested in nursing and will begin studying at Nassau Community College.
Nicole Khaimov was the school's 2020 valedictorian and a Regeneron Scholar. She completed the district's AP Capstone program, was recognized by the College Board as a National Advanced Placement Scholar and is a National Merit Scholarship winner. Nicole was president of Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society and held leadership roles in Pho Kappa Honor Society, the National Honor Society, the Mock Trial Team, the Mathletes, and the varsity tennis team. Nicole learned programming in 10th grade and plans to study computer sciences at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her ultimate goal: become a software engineer.

Megan Fahey, 18, was the school's salutatorian. She, too, was enrolled in the district’s AP Capstone program and on the high school principal’s list. Fahey was a member of three honors societies, was a Knights of Columbus Student of the Month, and a Spark! Challenge Winner. She was president of the Mathletes, a student council representative, volleyball team captain, a DECA member, and in the Athletes Helping Athletes program. Megan was also a member of the wind ensemble and the pep band/marching band. Megan was immediately intrigued by biomedical engineering when she first learned about it in the 10th grade, and she will study the topic at Fordham University this year.
“They are truly the leadership of the future and that’s what we believe in,” Joe Graziose, EVP, Residential Development and Construction at RXR Realty, said of the scholarship winners.
The Garvies Point Scholarship in Science, Environmental Science and Marine biology is given every year to deserving Glen Cove High School Seniors who have expressed a desire to enter into those fields. These scholarships, along with an annual grant to the high school to fund environmental sciences and marine biology educational experiences on site at Garvies Point are part of RXR’s deepening commitment to the Glen Cove City School District and the Glen Cove community.
