Glen Cove Councilwoman's Father, 72, Charged With Assault

Video shows the 72-year-old man walk up to his 19-year-old neighbor and attack him, according to a report.

GLEN COVE, NY — The 72-year-old father of a Glen Cove councilwoman has been charged with assault after video showed he attacked his 19-year-old neighbor, according to a report. News 12 reported that Louis Fugazy Sr., father of Councilwoman Danielle Fugazy Scagliola, had been feuding with his neighbors before he was accused of attacking Ali Awan on Monday.

Awan said Fugazy told him just before the attack: "'You better bring out your camera and start recording this,'" before grabbing Awan's throat and slamming him to the ground.

The Fugazys, however, said Awan and his family are partly responsible.

Danielle Fugazy Scagliola told News 12 in a statement: "Ali Awan and his family have been harassing my father, family and neighborhood for months, including videotaping minor children and posting nasty comments about minor children. They are involved in multiple legal actions with neighbors here in Glen Cove. Trying to provoke people, create controversy and extort money from people throughout the neighborhood is their standard operating procedure.

"Unfortunately, my 72 father succumbed to their provocation. That said, I do not condone violence. Those who know me, and my family, know that the things that are being said about us are simply not true."

Online court records showed Fugazy is scheduled to appear Tuesday in Glen Cove City Court on a charge of 3rd-degree assault with intent to cause physical injury.

Patch has reached out to the councilwoman and Glen Cove police and will update when we hear back.

A petition on Change.org created by Khizer Awan said his brother Ali was attacked for "sitting at the beach" in front of their oceanfront home, and that Louis Fugazy approached Ali with the intent to hurt him.

"He suffered injuries to his neck including a cervical sprain, neck contusions, and lacerations, requiring him to be hospitalized," Khizer Awan said.

The Awans feel unsafe living in the neighborhood, he said.

"Louis Fugazy is a danger to the public and has repeatedly harassed and attacked my family and I," he said.

The petition garnered more than 1,700 signatures by Thursday morning.
