U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi Declares Victory In Democratic Primary

GLEN COVE, NY — U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi declared victory Friday over challengers Melanie D'Arrigo and Michael Weinstock in New York Democratic primary race for the 3rd Congressional District. The district includes the Nassau County municipalities of Port Washington, Great Neck, Manhasset, Roslyn Heights, East Hills, Sea Cliff, Glen Cove, Oyster Bay, Syosset, Jericho, Hicksville, Plainview and Bethpage. The district also includes the Suffolk municipalities of Melville, Huntington, Northport, Kings Park, and Commack, as well as the Queens communities of Little Neck, Glen Oaks and Whitestone.

Suozzi, a former Glen Cove mayor and Nassau County executive, told The IslandNow.com in a statement he was "overwhelmed" by the support he received during a primary with "record-high turnout."

"With coronavirus, it was challenging to vote, but people came out in droves," he said. "I am honored that nearly 70 percent of Democrats said they want me to keep fighting for them. There is so much work to do."

Patch has reached out to Suozzi's campaign for comment and will update when we hear back. His campaign shared a Facebook post indicating he received 66.8 percent of the vote. D'Arrigo received 25.7 percent and Weinstock received 7.5 percent.

Suozzi is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, the chamber's chief tax-writing committee. He also serves on the Oversight and Tax Policy subcommittees.

D'Arrigo, a Port Washington resident who worked for 14 years as an Allied Health professional, described herself in a Patch candidate questionnaire as a mom and organizer who supports universal health care and wants "bold" measures to combat climate change. Patch has reached out to D'Arrigo's campaign and will update when we hear back.

Weinstock, of Great Neck, is a former firefighter and prosecutor who said he wants to be a "fresh voice" who children can look up to. He pointed to "incredibly high" taxes as one reason many young people can't afford to live on Long Island. Weinstock told Patch in a statement he called Suozzi on Thursday, June 25, and congratulated him on an "impressive victory."

"We had an engaging conversation and I told him that I look forward to voting for him and Joe Biden in November," Weinstock said.

In the Republican primary, George A. D. Santos, of Queens, a financial professional who wants to take on "a radical regime," ran unopposed. Bob Cohen and Howard Rabin were also on the ballot as third-party candidates running on the Working Families Party and Libertarian lines, respectively.
