E Harlem Tops Manhattan In Coronavirus Cases: City Data
East Harlem's 10029 zip code has the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Manhattan.
EAST HARLEM, NY — An East Harlem zip code leads Manhattan in the number of positive coronavirus cases, according to city data released this week.
The zip code 10029 — which spans East Harlem from East 96th Street up to East 117th Street east of Fifth Avenue — has seen 889 people test positive for coronavirus, according to city data. Despite topping Manhattan, the zip code only has the 46th most cases when compared to the entire city.
Neighborhoods in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx have been hit particularly hard by the coronavirus, resulting in 2,510 positive tests in Corona, 1939 in Elmhurst and 1725 in Borough Park, according to city data. Some neighborhoods in Staten Island also appear at the top of the list due to a high rate of testing for borough residents.

The rate of positive tests for East Harlem's 10029 may actually encourage neighborhood residents. The zip code ranks at the 40th most tested in the city, but has only the 46th most positive cases. Just about 54% of tests administered in 10029 have resulted in a confirmed case of coronavirus, a much lower rate than neighborhoods such as Corona and Elmhurst, which are both in the 70s.

More than 10,000 New York City residents are estimated to have died of coronavirus, according to new data released by the city this week that includes deaths of people who were not officially tested for the virus. The Health Department estimates, but cannot confirm, that the inclusion adds 3,778 New York City dwellers lost their lives to the fatal virus.
