Harlem Education Council Member Dies Of Coronavirus

HARLEM, NY — A member of the Community Education Council for School District 5, which spanned most of Central Harlem and parts of East Harlem, has died of the new coronavirus, according to a fund established by members of the council.

Rosa McLeish, a borough president appointee and recording secretary at CEC 5, died of the coronavirus recently, according to the council's fundraising page on GoFundMe.

"We lost the heart of CEC5, our queen Mrs. Rosa McLeish. The family has accrued unexpected expenses due to her untimely death, as a result of COVID-19. Please help the McLeish Family by making a donation now," the fund reads.

Each New York City school district is served by a community education council made up of parents from within the district. The councils hold monthly parent meetings, approve school zoning maps, advise city officials on school improvements and conduct performance reviews for neighborhood schools.

More than 134,000 New Yorkers have tested positive for the new coronavirus, with 9,562 confirmed deaths and 4,865 probable deaths, according to city Health Department data released on April 21.
