HARLEM, NY — Harlem's Aguilar library is slated for a $4.45 million renovation after the fate of New York's public library hung in the balance.

Harlem's 120-year-old library on East 110th Street took home the biggest chunk of a $34 million pot for construction projects at libraries across the state, state authorities announced last week.

The state funding was already included in a projected $15 million renovation to Aguilar library that kicked off in April, according to library representatives.

The renovations, expected to be complete in 2024, will improve accessibility to the building as well as create dedicated spaces for programming, individual reading areas, tech updates and electrical and sprinkler improvements.

The library shut during the construction but, before its closure, saw an eight percent increase in patronage, according to a representative of New York Public Library.

"The knowledge and information contained in books is invaluable," said New York State Senator Cordell Cleare. "Community libraries are essential [because] they also provide resources and services that help individuals and families to grow and thrive."

Across New York, the construction projects will include new electrical wiring and computer technology, accessibility improvements and energy efficiency upgrades.

"With a growing dependency on technology and the Internet for our everyday lives, our NYS Library facilities must have the funding to stay updated with current equipment to fulfill those needs," said state Senator Iwen Chu, Chair of the Libraries Committee.

Brooklyn Central library will also see construction thanks to a $3.5 million infusion.

The fate of New York City libraries hung in the balance in the New York City budget this year — to many New Yorkers' dismay.

In June, public libraries were spared from looming cuts totaling $36.2 million, which would have significantly affected library staffing and hours, The City reported.

"I'm energized by the overwhelming support we have received from thousands of New Yorkers who are standing with us to urge the City to support our libraries," said Linda E. Johnson, President and CEO of Brooklyn Public Library, in March.

In July, the awe-inspiring Midtown Stephen A. Schwarzman library building got a complete remodel, making public spaces more welcoming and cozy, the New York Times reported.
