Man Dies After Being Punched In The Head In Harlem: Police

NYPD initially believed that Charles Cunningham fell and hit his head, but new information revealed that he was attacked in East Harlem.

HARLEM, NY — A Harlem resident originally believed to have fallen and died in the neighborhood was actually attacked and killed, police said on Thursday.

Ariel Nunez, 40, stands accused of punching Charles Cunningham, 63, in the back of the head on April 20, at the intersection of 105th Street and Fifth Avenue, police said.

Cunningham was found unconscious on the street, and was rushed to a local hospital, where he died the next day, police said.

Nunez was charged with murder, reckless endangerment, and assault on Thursday, police said.

Cunningham accidentally bumped into Nunez while walking on the sidewalk, who subsequently turned around and punched him in the back of the head, sending him crashing to the ground, the New York Daily News reported.

Cunningham lived near West 112th Street, police said.
