Library Foundation to Discuss Plans in October

The Harrison Public Library Foundation will launch its capital campaign to renovate the Richard E. Halperin Memorial Library Building at a reception on Sunday, Oct. 2.

The event is planned from 4-6 pm at the . The reception is open to all Harrison residents and is free of charge.

At the event, representatives from H3 Hardy, the architectural firm retained by the library trustees, will present their proposed renovation. H3 Hardy is nationally recognized for planning and designing community spaces and has recently worked on library projects including the Botanical Research Institute of Texas Library in FortWorth, the library at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City, the Vassar College Library in Poughkeepsie, and the library at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

H3’s library planning and design practice experts, Daria Pizzetta and Margaret Sullivan have been working with the library trustees, staff and patrons, as well as with residents, for the past several months to tailor the new design to the Harrison community's needs and wishes.

"Our current facilities are outdated and we want to change that," says Diane Sammons, president of the board of trustees. “The downtown library is located in a 1961 building, which needs to be updated. In addition to providing state of the art library services, we envision a social, civic and cultural center for the Town of Harrison. Community support is vital to bringing the Harrison Public Library into the 21st century,and we are thrilled that the Harrison Public Library Foundation has joined us in this effort.”

Dr. Sammons, other library trustees, and the new Library Director Galina Chernykh, will be at the reception to talk about their vision for the future of the Harrison Funds for the planned renovation are being raised by the , which was established in November 2010 with a commitment the library as a valuable community resource by improving its facilities, programs and capabilities. At the event, Stephen Hicks, HPLF President, will provide an update on the foundation’s efforts to finance the project.
