Harrison Poll: Town Politics

This week's Harrison poll asks readers if they support a new town board consultant position in the Harrison Police Department.

The controversial police liaison position created by the town board in March to serve as a communicator between the town board and police department has become a hot button issue over the last two weeks.

At the last town board meeting an attorney from the PBA (Harrison Police Officer's Union) threatened legal action if the position was implemented. Then, last week, Harrison Councilwoman Marlene Amelio said that she no longer supports the position.

Harrison Mayor/Supervisor Joan Walsh has since said that she still fully supports the position and that the other members of the board still support it, but Amelio's stand against it could be a sign that there is rising support against the position that was originally created to improve communication between the board and police.

The position is expected to cost the town approximately $65,000 a year, but can be eliminated with approval from the town board and police. The person who will fill the position will be a "trained police or law enforcement officer with command experience and more than 20 years of experience," and will serve in an advisory role, according to a statement issued by the board when it was approved in March.

What do readers think? The position is expected to improve the sometimes turbulent relationship between the board and police, but is it worth the price in tax dollars?
