Here are the top 3 stories today in Brooklyn Heights-DUMBO:
- New York State's redistricting commission sent two sets of district maps to the state legislature that would determine State Senate, Assembly, and Congress boundaries for the next decade. Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO's state senate district now looks like it will be exclusively in Brooklyn – which poses a problem for State Senator Brian Kavanagh, who happens to live on The Lower East Side, making it impossible for him to represent a fully Brooklyn district. (THE CITY)
- Thousands, if not millions, of migratory birds crash into glass buildings in New York City each fall and spring. But this is a fixable problem, according to experts at NYC Audubon, who point to examples of "bird-friendly" design across the city–including in Brooklyn Heights, where the metal grill encasing the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse prevents collisions. The birds that crash into the glassy Quay Towers, on the other hand, aren't as lucky, as the building's facade reflects nearby trees. (Bloomberg)
- Many of Brooklyn's biggest retail leases of 2021 took place in Brooklyn Heights and Downtown Brooklyn. That includes the 70,000 square feet Brooklyn Prospect Charter School at 80 Willoughby Street. (The Real Deal)
