Local nonprofits are doing great work in the Huntington area. Here are 10 that people may consider supporting this holiday season.
HUNTINGTON, NY — If you’re like many of your Huntington neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.
Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.
Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Huntington area.

Here are 10 local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:
1. Camp Good Mourning!: Provides free bereavement camp programs for Long Island children, ages 7 to 17, coping with the death of a parent and/or sibling.
2. Handler Hope Foundation: Funds cancer research and raises awareness for HER2 positive and NNN breast cancer. The charity's mission is to change the course of cancer and the imposition it has on those impacted by it.
3. Corey's Promise: Helps families offset the financial burdens they endure during their child's cancer diagnosis and raises awareness for pediatric cancer.
4. Daniela Conte Foundation: Strives to make a difference in the lives of children battling cancer. The nonprofit's overarching goal is to provide direct financial support, raise awareness, and fund vital research to aid brave young warriors and their families. The charity believes the help it extends through its programs is a beacon of hope when families battling this disease need it most, and it aspires to offer a guiding light through the darkest of times.
5. Helping Hands Rescue Mission: Helps local families in need of food, clothing, household supplies, holiday assistance and seasonal events like Easter and Christmas. The organization currently provides food, clothing and household goods to roughly 1,000 local families each month.
6. North Shore Holiday House: A tuition-free summer sleep-away camp that aims to enrich the lives of low-income girls and empowers them to navigate the world ahead.
7. Tri CYA: Supports the growth and development of youth and their families in the communities of Huntington, South Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor. Provides a broad range of educational, recreational, social, cultural, athletic, counseling and advocacy programs, working closely and cooperatively with businesses, school districts, law enforcement, community groups, government agencies and religious organizations as well as with individuals, parents, and youth community volunteers.
8. Home Sweet Home Animal Rescue: Rescues animals, performs trap-neuter-releases, offers animals for pet adoption and provides medical care to rescued animals.
9. The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians: Practices friendship, unity and Christian charity while working to strengthen Roman Catholic Faith, the United States, local communities; and perpetuate religion, history, culture and tradition.
10. Feral to Family: Find permanent adoption homes for kittens and social feline adults, as well as reduce the number of homeless and abandoned cats within colonies throughout Long Island.
