3 Hurt in Crash Involving Suffolk Police Car

Police say the police car was following an ambulance with its sirens on when it collided with a car pulling out of a mall lot.

HUNTINGTON STATION, NY – Three people were injured in a crash involving a Suffolk County police car Sunday evening in Huntington Station.

According to police, a 2018 Volkswagen Passat pulled out of the Walt Whitman Mall parking lot on Walt Whitman Road at 5:51 p.m. when it collided with a marked police vehicle that was following an ambulance northbound. The police car had its lights and sirens activated.

Huntington Manor firefighters used heavy rescue "Jaws of Life" tools to remove the police officer and two occupants from the vehicles.

The police officer was taken to Nassau University Medical Center. The driver of the Volkswagen was taken to Huntington Hospital and a passenger in the Volkswagen was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. All three are being treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Firefighters and EMS crews from the Huntington Manor Fire Department, Melville Fire Department and Huntington Community First Aid Squad were dispatched to the scene.

About 50 emergency responders were on the scene with two heavy rescue trucks, three engines and five ambulances.
