Berland Holds Mock Town Board Meeting

Councilwoman Susan A. Berland recently welcomed Weblo Troop 178 to Town Hall.

The scouts participated in a “mock town board meeting” arranged by Berland, in which the scouts role-played as council members and as citizens who testified at a public hearing. In the process, they learned the duties of a council member as well as the ways citizens of the Town of Huntington could get involved in the democratic process.

In addition to the “mock Town Board meeting” Councilwoman Berland arranged for the Department of Environmental Waste Management to give a brief presentation to the scouts on the Town of Huntington’s comprehensive recycling program.

The program concluded with a presentation from the Town of Huntington’s Department of Public Safety, which included a tour of the building’s video surveillance room.

“Inviting scouts and students to Town Hall is a great part of my job,” commented Councilwoman Berland. “Learning about civics, government and citizen responsibility should begin at an early age.  The value of this information is immeasurable and the Weblos enjoyed their ‘board meeting.’ It was a fun time for all.”
