This Cat Gave Birth In The Back Of A Car During A Storm: Huntington Adoptable Pet Of The Week
Porsche's kittens were adopted immediately. She's still searching for a forever home, according to the shelter.
HUNTINGTON, NY — Porsche, a gentle gray-striped young mother with striking green eyes, is the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter’s Huntington Pet of the Week. The one-year-old cat was rescued earlier this year after being found outdoors, pregnant and alone, according to Debbi Larkin, president of the shelter.
Larkin said Porsche was discovered in May 2025 while looking for a safe place to give birth.
“She was found wandering outside, pregnant, alone, and searching for a safe place to bring her babies into the world,” Larkin said.

Porsche settled into a cardboard box that a neighbor left out for her, Larkin said. Days later, during a torrential storm, the box was moved into the back of a car to keep her dry.
“It was there, tucked safely away from the rain, that she brought her kittens into the world,” Larkin said.

Porsche gave birth to four kittens. One did not survive, but the remaining three were healthy and adopted quickly after moving into foster care, Larkin said.
When Porsche arrived at the shelter, staff placed her in the kitten room. Still in “mom mode,” she tried caring for other kittens, prompting the team to move her to a room with adult cats to help her adjust. Nothing about the transition intimidated her. Larkin described Porsche as calm and social.
“Nothing fazed Porsche, not even a room full of strangers,” she said. “With her calm, mellow spirit, she walked right up to each cat, introduced herself, and instantly made friends.” Visitors are greeted in the same way.
“The moment you walk into her room, she’s the first cat you see,” Larkin said. “She trots over, sits politely at your feet, and looks up at you with those luminous green eyes that seem to speak straight to your heart. And the instant your hand meets her fur, she begins to purr.”
Porsche enjoys toy springs, play mice, and especially wand toys, which Larkin said get her “leaping and twirling like a little athlete.” She also loves curling up with another cat or napping in a sunny spot on top of the condo.
Porsche is FELV/FIV negative, parasite-free, fully vaccinated, litter-box trained, and spayed.
Anyone interested in meeting her can call 631-757-4517, email cats@laphuntington.org, visit the shelter’s Facebook page or stop in during open hours. The shelter, located at 3 Verleye Ave., East Northport, is open Tuesday–Sunday from 12–4 p.m., with Thursday evening visits by appointment from 7–9 p.m.
Larkin said Porsche’s name is fitting.
“Just like the Porsche logo that symbolizes agility, elegance, and power, our Porsche embodies every one of those traits,” she said. “Let’s give this stunning girl the loving, secure home she deserves. One where she will never again have to search for food, shelter, or safety."
