'Clever Trickster' Phoenix: Huntington Adoptable Pet Of The Week
Phoenix, a 1-year-old dark tabby male, is a "gentle giant with a heart ready to heal" after his previous family died.

HUNTINGTON, NY — Phoenix, a 1-year-old dark tabby male, is the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter's Huntington Pet of the Week.
Phoenix is a "gentle giant with a heart ready to heal," said Debbi Larkin, president of the shelter.
"Rising from the ashes of heartbreak, Phoenix is more than just a name, it’s a promise of new beginnings," Larkin said.

Phoenix has bib-like white markings and eyes the color of a peridot gemstone and weighs in at a solid 16 pounds of "love, fluff, and feline charm," according to Larkin. But don’t let his size fool you: Phoenix is a soft soul with a tender past.
"He lost his beloved owner and feline family in a sudden tragedy, and though he carries that quiet sadness in his big green eyes, he’s ready for a fresh start with someone who sees his gentle, resilient heart," Larkin said.

Phoenix has only been with the shelter for a short time but he has adjusted "so well" to his new surroundings, Larkin said.
"When we first rescued him, we sent him into a quiet foster care home to make one of the transitions as easy as possible," she said. "He spent about three weeks there with a family which included a dog, who gave him everything he needed to get through his pain and loss. When he arrived at the shelter he was cool, calm and collected."

Phoenix may not run to greet a person like a typical extroverted cat, according to Larkin. He’s more of an introvert, meaning someone will have to be the one to make the first move.
"But the moment you reach out and touch his head, he melts into affection, purring like a motorboat and leaning in for love," Larkin said. "He especially enjoys being brushed, closing his eyes in bliss as the strokes smooth his thick, beautiful fur. And if you are lucky enough, he will flop down on his back looking for a belly rub."
He’s a "bit of a clever trickster" at mealtime, pretending not to be interested in the communal plate so he can score a special serving just for himself, Larkin said.
"Of course, he happily joins the others once he’s polished off his 'private' dish," she said. "It’s hard not to smile at his little routines. Phoenix knows how to work a room, even from the quiet corners. When it’s time to play, he transforms. Springs, kitty kickers, and anything with catnip causes Phoenix to become a kitten again, full of energy and joy. Despite his introverted nature, he gets along beautifully with other cats and would do well in a multi-cat home where he can have both companionship and his own space."
Phoenix has tested negative for FELV and FIV, tested negative for parasites, and had his ears, eyes, teeth and heart checked. He is also litter box trained, microchipped and is neutered.

The rescue is at 3 Verleye Ave., East Northport, and visiting hours are Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
The shelter is also open from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday nights only for those who cannot make it during the daytime hours.
"Phoenix is a survivor, a sweetheart, and a cat ready to open his heart again to the right person," Larkin said. "If you’re patient, kind, and looking for a loyal, low-key companion who will reward your love one hundred fold, Phoenix is waiting for you. Come meet this gentle giant and help him rise into his next chapter, one filled with warmth, stability, and the love he so deeply deserves."
