‘Dapper’ Rover, A Loyal Tuxedo Cat Overlooked For Months: Huntington Adoptable Pet Of The Week

Rover has spent nine months waiting for someone to notice him.

HUNTINGTON, NY — With his sleek black-and-white coat and shining yellow eyes, Rover looks every bit the gentleman — dignified, affectionate, and ready for the spotlight he deserves.

“Rover is a very handsome young tuxedo cat, a little over a year old, with striking yellow eyes that shine like marbles,” said Debbi Larkin, president of the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter in East Northport. “He’s the picture of feline charm — equal parts sophistication and sweetness.”

Rover’s story began under a neighborhood deck, where he and his four siblings lived with their feral mom.

“It wasn’t exactly a cat-friendly area,” Larkin said. “Rescuers stepped in to help — the mom was humanely trapped, spayed, and released, while Rover and his siblings went into foster care to start new lives.”

As the runt of the litter, Rover was often overlooked — but his foster mom saw what others missed.

“She gave him extra love and freedom, letting him roam her room,” Larkin said. “Soon, Rover became her loyal cuddle buddy.”

Today, Rover is a gentle, affectionate boy who just needs a moment to warm up to new people. Once he does, his purr — described by Larkin as a “motorboat” — doesn’t stop.

“He loves companionship, both feline and human,” Larkin said. “He’s even done well around small dogs.”

Rover’s favorite pastime is perching on the tallest cat condo, surveying his kingdom with quiet confidence. “He’s dignified, but curious,” Larkin added. “He likes to think things over before jumping into the fun.”

He’s also known for his playful flair.

“He adores his scratching posts, loves to show off his long stretch, and proudly carries around a stuffed mouse — he wants you to know he’s a mighty hunter,” she said with a laugh.

True to his tuxedo personality, Rover is loving, loyal, and full of charm.

“He forms strong bonds with his humans,” Larkin said. “If he chooses you, he’ll give you his undivided attention, endless cuddles, and a lifetime of love.”

Rover has been fully vetted — he’s tested negative for FeLV and FIV, parasite-free, neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and litter box trained. After nine months of waiting, he’s hoping for a family who will finally see him for the special cat he is — ideally one with another friendly cat to keep him company.

“Unfortunately, he was overlooked again at our last adoption event,” Larkin said. “Everyone always wants a tiny kitten. But Rover has so much love to give — he’s truly one of a kind.”
