Off-Duty Suffolk Officer Faces DWI Charge After Injuring Pedestrian: Police
The officer was suspended without pay after he crashed into a man who was running across the street early Sunday, police say.
HUNTINGTON, NY — An off-duty Suffolk County police officer was arrested after Suffolk police said he drove while drunk and injured a pedestrian in a crash in Huntington early Sunday.
A 28-year-old Huntington Station man was running westbound across New York Avenue at Carver Street when he was struck by a southbound 2012 Chevrolet Camaro, driven by Alexander Vargas, 30, of Babylon, at approximately 2:30 a.m., police said.
The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was brought to a local hospital, police said.

Vargas was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.
Vargas is assigned to the Second Precinct and was off duty at the time of the crash, police said. He was suspended without pay following the crash, the department stated.
