Kitten Pulled From BMW Engine Still Waiting For Home: Huntington Adoptable Pet Of The Week

The 6-month-old tabby has waited three months for an adopter after being rescued from a car engine.

HUNTINGTON, NY — A kitten rescued from inside the engine of a BMW at a local train station is still looking for a permanent home three months after his rescue, according to Debbi Larkin, president of the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter in East Northport.

Larkin said the kitten, now named Beemer, was discovered after rescuer John Debacker heard odd noises coming from beneath a car hood and decided to check. When he investigated, he found a small, terrified tabby wedged deep in the engine compartment.

“No one knows how a dark tabby kitten named Beemer ended up inside the engine of a BMW at a local train station," Larkin said. "Only he knows how long he’d been hiding there...greasy, terrified, and far too close to danger.”

She said that Debacker worked cautiously until “a tiny pair of frightened eyes peeked back at him from deep in the machinery.”

Beemer was brought to the shelter shortly afterward. Larkin said he arrived quiet and guarded and avoided being picked up at first. With time, his behavior changed significantly.

“Weeks passed, and Beemer began to bloom," Larkin said. "Now, the very moment you reach toward him, he reaches right back. The instant he lands in your arms, he’s nuzzling your chin, asking...no, demanding his beloved head scratches and kisses.”

Larkin also described Beemer as one of the more energetic kittens in the room.

“Beemer trains like he’s preparing for the Kitten Olympics and sprints across the room as if he’s powering a tiny, invisible generator," Larkin said.

After his running sessions, Larkin said, “he becomes the definition of cool and calm, curling up with the serene confidence of a cat who knows he’s safe now.”

Beemer is now almost 6 months old and fully vetted. Larkin said he has tested negative for FeLV/FIV, tested negative for parasites, is fully vaccinated, neutered, microchipped, and litter box trained.

Despite his progress, Beemer continues to be overlooked.

“Sadly, some people pass him by, thinking he isn’t ‘unique-looking’ enough or outgoing enough," Larkin said. "But they’re wrong.”

She added that the three kittens he shared a room with were adopted together last weekend while Beemer watched them leave.

“He has waited three long months for his family,” Larkin said.

Larkin said Beemer would do well in a home with another friendly cat close to his age. She described him as “sweet, playful, affectionate Beemer” and said he simply needs someone to give him a chance.

“Beemer is proof of the power of rescue, resilience, and the unexpected friendships that change all of us for the better," Larkin said.
