HUNTINGTON, NY — Huntington's adoptable pet of the week is Latke, who may be quiet by nature, but his story leaves a lasting impression.

Latke arrived at the Grateful Paw shelter in November 2025 alongside his mother and two siblings after, what President of the shelter Debbi Larkin says was a dangerous start to life.

The kittens were born behind a neighbor’s shed — a place that should have been safe, but quickly became threatening when a dog discovered them. A Good Samaritan intervened just in time, bringing the small family indoors where they were able to experience warmth, safety, and care before being transferred to the shelter.

Now about 6 months old, Latke has grown into a handsome young kitten with a look all his own. While his siblings were black-and-white and extra fluffy, Latke stands out with a coat that shifts between soft ginger and warm buff tones depending on the light. His golden eyes hint at a curious, thoughtful personality — one that blossoms with patience and a gentle approach.

"Latke is affectionate in his own quiet way," Larkin said. "He is not a fan of being picked up, but he enjoys belly rubs, butt scratches, and especially brushing sessions, which immediately send him into a happy purr. He’s quick to let you know if the brushing stops too soon."

Latke also loves the company of other cats, often curling up beside a feline friend or stretching out in a sunny spot atop his condo.

According to the shelter, playtime brings out another side of him. He enjoys rolling toys and, for families with an exercise wheel, Latke has shown that he can run as if he’s training for the Olympics. In calmer moments, he can often be found gazing out the window, quietly observant — a kitten who seems aware of how far he’s come.

Latke is fully vetted and ready for adoption. He is vaccinated, neutered, microchipped, litter box trained, and has tested negative for parasites, FeLV, and FIV.

Despite his gentle nature, Latke has watched both of his siblings leave the shelter, likely due to their fluffier appearances. But staff say there is something uniquely special about buff and ginger cats like Latke.

Cats with this coloring are often described as having a wide range of personalities, from independent to deeply affectionate, and are sometimes referred to as “Velcro cats” — preferring closeness with their humans, but always on their own terms. Latke fits that description well, showing signs of a snuggly side that will continue to emerge as trust builds.

Latke would do best in a home where patience, kindness, and respect for his cues are part of everyday life.

With time, attentiveness, and gentle affection, his bond with his future family is expected to deepen into something truly special. Those interested in meeting Latke can contact the shelter at 631 757-4517, email cats@laphuntington.org, visit the shelter’s Facebook page, or stop by in person.

Grateful Paw is located at 3 Verleye Avenue, East Northport, and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 12–4 p.m. Thursday evening hours from 7–9 p.m. are available by appointment only.

"For Latke, the wait continues — quietly and patiently — for someone to look his way and say, You’re home," Larkin said.
