Event: Electing the President: The Electoral College
Location: Main Auditorium
Date: Wednesday, Oct. 9
Time: 7:00 – 8:00 pm
Description: Join James Coll, an adjunct professor at Hofstra University and Nassau Community College for these non-partisan discussions about the presidency. What were the Founders thinking when they created the Electoral College? This lecture will provide an overview of the constitutional road to the White House. The focus will be on the complex system designed to decide who gets to be our nation’s Chief Executive—and whether it still needs to be so complicated. Registration required and open to all.

Event: K9 Fire Safety & Investigations
Location: Main Auditorium
Date: Thursday, Oct. 10
Time: 7 p.m.
Description: Meet Fire Marshal Ryan Fischer and his K9 partner Chuck and learn about the science and legal aspects of fire investigations and the K9's role in them. K9 Chuck is an Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) trained and certified Accelerant Detection Canine (ACD) assigned to the Suffolk County Fire Marshal's Office. He and his partner, Fire Marshal Ryan Fischer, are currently the only ACD team in Suffolk County. They assist fire investigators across the county in conducting origin and cause investigations, as well as promote fire safety and prevent arson through public education. Event: Breast Cancer Prevention with Dr. Frank Bonura

Description: One out of eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, making it the most common cancer in women. Dr. Bonura will discuss the risk factors for developing breast cancer and review lifestyle changes, which can reduce your risk of breast cancer by 30 percent and if followed early in life can reduce your risk by 50 percent or more. Description: Chief of the Crime Laboratory Constance Dinkel will take you behind the scenes of the Suffolk County Crime Laboratory. Learn about interesting cases, types of evidence that is received and analyzed, and dispel misconceptions offered by the "CSI-effect." Recommended for high school students and adults due to its graphic nature. Open and active cases will not be discussed. Registration required and open to all.

Description: Join us for this monthly meeting! Read "Red" by John Logan. Painter Mark Rothko is working on his Seagram Murals, commissioned for the Four Seasons Hotel, alongside his new assistant, Ken. The two discuss what it means to create art, define a legacy, and defend one's principles while working on the looming deadline. Registration required and open to all.
Event: In-Person Book Signing with New York Times Bestselling Author David Ellis

Description: Join us for an amazing Friday night filled with mystery, murder, and conversation with David Ellis. David will be traveling in from Chicago to speak about his latest book, "The Best Lies." David Ellis is a judge and an Edgar-award-winning author of 11 novels of crime fiction, as well as eight bestselling books co-authored with the legendary James Patterson. His novels have been translated into more than 10 languages worldwide. In December 2014, David was sworn in as the youngest-serving justice of the Illinois Appellate Court for the First District. David will also be available to personally sign copies of his books that will be sold at the event by The Next Chapter bookstore, our local independent bookshop in Huntington Village, with proceeds donated to the Friends of the Library. Description: As part of the Great Give Back, a nationwide community service initiative for libraries, we are focusing on sharing resources and supporting our community with a Mental Health Fair, and by participating in the Out of the Darkness Community Walk at Jones Beach. Local organizations including Alzheimer’s Association, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Catholic Charities, Family Service League, Federation of Organizations, National Alliance on Mental Illness, RISE Life Services, RESPONSE, and more, will be on hand to share information and resources about the important work these organizations do to help people combat and manage mental illness. Open to all.

Description: We will wrap up our Mental Health fair with an impactful QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Suicide Prevention Training session. This program equips participants with the essential skills to recognize the warning signs of suicide, confidently approach someone in crisis, and guide them to appropriate professional help. Suicide is a preventable tragedy, and each of us has a role to play in saving lives. Event: Unraveling the Mystery of Dementia: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

Description: Dementia is a complex and mysterious disease. With new research and advances in medicine, we are finally unraveling the mystery of this devastating condition. Description: Learn about the making of the funniest horror film of all time and how it was almost never filmed! In his Canterbury Tales, the English poet Chaucer relates of a storytelling contest among a group of pilgrims traveling from the outskirts of London to see the holy sea of Canterbury. The prize for the best tale? A free dinner. In this month’s selection a Pardoner, or seller of indulgences, tells a story of three roguish young men who end up killing each other in pursuit of a cache of gold. Description: What is it like to work on some of the biggest news stories to hit Long Island? Find out in this ripped from the headlines lecture given by the former Long Island bureau manager of Channel 7 Eyewitness News. Vicki Metz will take you behind the scenes to share the stories that captivated us between 1987 and 2009. Some became national news like the LIRR massacre, TWA flight 800, the Amy Fisher/Joey Buttafuoco saga, and many more. The stories that gripped us then share the same elements that fascinate us today. We will discuss what makes it to air and what is left behind on the cutting room floor. The answers may surprise you!
