'Quiet Flame' Sunkist: Huntington Adoptable Pet Of The Week
Sunkist, a 1-year-old male orange tabby, is still warming to human affection. "A joyful, affectionate cat waiting just beneath the surface."

HUNTINGTON, NY — Sunkist, a 1-year-old male orange tabby, is the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter's Huntington Pet of the Week.
Sunkist was referred to as "the Quiet Flame" by Debbi Larkin, president of the shelter. He is currently tucked into the quiet corners of the shelter. He has a coat the color of a "golden autumn afternoon," Larkin said.
Sunkist has a habit of winning hearts quietly, as opposed to with grand gestures. He has soft eyes the color of warm copper and a "calm, watchful presence that suggests there’s more to him than meets the eye," according to Larkin.

Sunkist arrived at the shelter in March, part of a large colony of more than 10 cats and kittens rescued from the East End of Long Island, Larkin noted. He came with Whispers, a sister, who has since been adopted, and some believe his lingering shyness might be the shadow of that separation, Larkin said.
"While he has yet to warm up completely to human affection, his story is one of quiet potential and gentle hope," Larkin said. "Though still cautious with people, he has shown interest in becoming an indoor cat. The rescuer who brought him in saw something special in him...a possibility for a connection. He may not seek out attention, but he doesn’t shy away from the other cats in the room. He seems to find comfort in their presence, often watching the action from a tucked-away cubby with curiosity in his eyes. And every now and then, something magical happens: A flash of orange streaks across the room as he joins in the fun, chasing his beloved spring toy or pouncing on a soft stuffed mouse. These little bursts of play remind us that there’s a joyful, affectionate cat waiting just beneath the surface."

Larkin said that anyone who knows orange tabbies will say they’re some of the "most affectionate, social, and endearing companions you’ll ever meet."
"While we haven’t yet seen the full spectrum of that classic orange-cat charm, we believe he’s simply waiting for the right person," Larkin said. "The one who will earn his trust, show him he’s safe, and give him the space and time he needs to blossom."
Sunkist has tested negative for FELV and FIV, tested negative for parasites, and had his ears, eyes, mouth and heart checked. He has also received all of his vaccines, is neutered, microchipped and is litter box trained.

The rescue is at 3 Verleye Ave., East Northport, and visiting hours are Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
The shelter is also open from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday nights only for those who cannot make it during the daytime hours.
"He’s not the cat who will greet you at the door on day one," Larkin said. "But give him your patience, and you just might be the one to unlock his full heart. Because when he finds his people, we know all of those wonderful orange-tabby traits will appear like magic. Could that person be you? Come meet him and let him quietly change your life."
