Steakhouse Moving In to Canterbury Ales Site
New York Avenue building getting upgrade after pub closed in August.
A steakhouse will move into the space occupied for decades by the iconic Canterbury Ales.
Workers who have been repainting the front of the pub and doing other work in recent days say an Argentine steakhouse will move into the vacant pub at 314 New York Ave. The name or date for its opening are not known.
Canterbury Ales closed without warning in August, with owner Billy Hoest citing financial problems as the reason. He acknowledged difficulties with the state tax department as the reason, telling Newsday that he owed more than $100,000 in sales tax receipts. Hoest owned the pub for more than 36 years.
