HUNTINGTON, NY — Diamond, a 3-month-old female kitten with the "biggest heart," is the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter's Huntington Pet of the Week.

"Diamond’s story began in the most unexpected of places — a cardboard box tucked behind the bleachers at Duck Stadium," said Debbi Larkin, president of the shelter, referring to where the Long Island Ducks play. "While fans were cheering for home runs, a brave mama cat was quietly bringing four tiny kittens into the world. Diamond was the smallest of the bunch, barely larger than a baseball, but she made sure her tiny voice was heard from day one."

Rescuers brought the whole litter to safety, and one by one, her brothers found loving forever homes, according to Larkin.

"But Diamond who is sweet, spunky, and unforgettable was left behind," Larkin said. "Maybe it’s because she’s a bit extra. Extra vocal when she wants attention (and she always wants attention). Extra needy when it comes to cuddles. Extra energetic when there’s a toy nearby. She might be the runt of the litter, but she’s the queen of personality."

Diamond starts every morning as if it’s the "most exciting day of her life," Larkin said. She’s the first to the food bowl, tail high and chirping proudly. The minute she hears the jingle of a key or the creak of a door, she races to the window, eager to greet visitors and hoping it will be the day someone sees her.

She’s a total cuddle bug, happiest when curled up in a lap or perched on a shoulder, Larkin said.

"But she also needs space to zoom, toys to pounce on, and a companion (feline or human) to help her burn off her endless energy and keep her company when the world gets too quiet," she said. "Diamond isn’t just a kitten…she’s a spark. A snuggly, silly, talkative little soul with enough love and curiosity to fill an entire stadium."
