LONG ISLAND, NY— Two hazardous weather outlooks were issued for Long Island on Tuesday, involving wildfire smoke and high rip current risk, according to forecasts.

Wildfire smoke will cover Long Island and the northeast region on Tuesday and could lead to decreased air quality.

Widespread haze is expected to appear after 11a.m., and will continue before 11 p.m., the National Weather Service said.

The smoke is from wildfires burning in Nova Scotia. The Canadian province is experiencing high heat and favorable fire conditions, and more than 25,000 acres were on fire as of Monday. About 16,000 residents near the fires have had to evacuate.

Wildfire smoke from fires burning in Alberta hazed skies over Massachusetts before Memorial Day. But that smoke was located very high in the atmosphere.

In addition to wildfire smoke, a high rip current risk is in effect on Long Island throughout Tuesday evening.

The National Weather Service announced in a statement that life-threatening rip currents are likely for all people entering the surf zone.

"Anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf" the statement said. "Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water."

If you enter the surf zone, always have a flotation device with you and swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, and do not swim against the current.

If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and yell or wave for help.
