Police Nab Homeless Man for Rash of Lindy Burglaries

Cops say Andrew Vanbourgondien was arrested on Tuesday night and charged with seven burglaries that occurred between August 22 and 28 in Lindenhurst and North Lindenhurst.

A 22-year-old, undomiciled man was arrested on Tuesday night by Suffolk Police and charged with the burglaries of several homes in Lindenhurst and North Lindenhurst that occurred in the past week.

According to police, Andrew Vanbourgondien was apprehended on Tuesday evening after he fled on foot after being seen by the owner of a home on Frank Street he was trying to enter.

"He attempted to climb into the kitchen window. The homeowner observed him coming into the window, and the subject immediately fled on foot. This was at 7:55 p.m.," Inspector Gerard Gigante, commanding officer of the SCPD's First Precinct, told Lindenhurst Patch on Wednesday.

No one at the home was hurt, Gigante noted, adding officers then set up a perimeter, and approximately 45 minutes later officers saw the suspect on North Queens Avenue.

"Officers spotted him on the roof of the (FVSA) Soccer Academy where he was arrested," the inspector said.

Police said Vanbourgondien is allegedly behind seven burglaries that took place between August 22 and 28.

They include one on South Broadway on August 22, one on 36th Street on August 24, another on Broome Avenue overnight on August 24-25, one on Grand Avenue on August 26, one on Queens Avenue on August 27 and the one on Frank Street on August 28.

"He took money and electronics he could carry, like iPods, computers/laptops," Gigante said, noting the suspect entered the homes through open windows and doors.

Police officials added Vanbourgondien also allegedly broke into the FVSA on North Queens Avenue on August 28 before he was apprehended, but fled after the alarm went off.

Vanbourgondien was arraigned in First District Court today, according to police, and charged with six counts of burglary in the second degree and one count of burglary in the third degree.

Gigante further noted police are looking into any other possible connections between Vanbourgondien and other burglaries in the area, but couldn't comment on recovery of any items that were taken, as that's still under investigation.
