Long Beach Students Attend Hofstra’s 'What I Want to Be Day'
Lido Elementary School third- to fifth-graders learn about careers while taking in a women's basketball game.
Long Beach students in grades 3 to 5 attended Hofstra University's Mack Sports Complex to learn about future careers and enjoy some Division 1 women’s college basketball action.
Lido Elementary School was one of 14 Nassau County elementary schools to participate in Hofstra University Athletics Department’s annual "What I Want to Be Day" prior to a special noon tip-off of a Hofstra women’s basketball game against Northeastern on Jan. 13.
The students spent two hours before the Hofstra-Northeastern game learning about various careers in fields such as recreation, business, science, health, and communications. Hofstra women's basketball players Nicole Capurso and Candice Bellocchio also spoke to the students about their career plans after they graduate college.

Following the career presentations, the nearly 2,000 participating students helped cheer the Hofstra Pride onto a 77-63 win over Northeastern in a key Colonial Athletic Association game. Throughout the game students were quizzed with questions on what they had learned during the morning career presentations.
“Our students loved the idea of visiting a college campus,” said Lido Principal Brenda Young. “They also enjoyed speaking with Hofstra students about their academic and social experiences in college.”
