NASSAU COUNTY, NY — Nassau County residents this morning probably heard a fighter jet zooming around the sky. Though Long Island is home to many airports, a fighter jet is an uncommon sight in our skies.

So why did it scream over the skies of Long Island? There was an incursion into restricted airspace.

With President Joe Biden in New York City this morning to address the United Nations General Assembly, airspace around the city was restricted. According to the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, which monitors U.S. airspace, a civilian plane entered the restricted airspace 20 nautical miles east of the city around 11:40 a.m.

The aircraft did not respond to communications. An F-15 fighter jet escorted the plane out of the restricted airspace, and that's what Long Islanders heard and saw overhead.

According to NBC news, the civilian plane took off from MacArthur Airport in Islip.
