Car Catches Fire, 'Explodes' Near Hudson Yards: See It

A car was engulfed in flames and appeared to explode Thursday on a street steps from Hudson Yards, according to authorities and witnesses.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — A car caught fire and apparently exploded Thursday morning on a street near Hudson Yards, according to authorities and witnesses.

A call came in just before 11 a.m. reporting a car fire outside 50 Hudson Yards, near the corner of 10th Avenue and West 33rd Street, an FDNY spokesperson said.

Twitter user JarekFA, who posted photos of the vehicle covered in flames, told Patch that they were inside an adjacent office building "when we heard a loud boom."

"Looked outside and it was fully engulfed in flames," they added. "It was flaming for a good 5 minutes or so."

Firefighters extinguished the fire by around 11 a.m., photos showed. There were no injuries, according to the FDNY.

At least two other Twitter users mentioned hearing a loud explosion, followed by a second boom minutes later.

Authorities did not mention the brand or model of the car, nor specify a possible cause. Hours later, it still appeared sat on the street, a burned-out husk of its former self.
