During Trump's New York City visit, the president made some of the most widely-criticized remarks of his presidency. Following a press conference to announce infrastructure reform actions, Trump got in a heated exchange with the press where he walked back a condemnation of white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups that participated in a deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Trump also unleashed a tirade against the national media and who he called "alt-left" protesters who gathered in Charlottesville over the weekend.

NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill previously estimated the cost of protecting the president and his family at $308,000 per day. The city spent $24 million to keep the Trump family safe between the 2016 presidential election and Trump's Inauguration, according to city officials.
