Man Hit With Brick In Random Hell's Kitchen Attack, Police Say

The 61-year-old victim was standing on the street when a man walked up an hit him in the head with a brick.

HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — A homeless man is facing assault charges in connection to a seemingly random attack on a Hell's Kitchen street, an NYPD spokesperson said.

A 61-year-old man was standing on West 43rd Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues when he was approached by 42-year-old Laru Curls, police said. Curls hit the man on the head with a brick and then fled the location, police said.

Curls — who police said is homeless — was arrested near the scene of the attack shortly after fleeing the scene, police said. He was sent to Beth Israel hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and charged with second-degree assault, police said.

The victim, who was not identified, was taken to NYU Medical Center suffering injuries to the head, police said. The man is expected to survive his injuries, an NYPD spokesman said.

The man and Curls did not know each other before the attack, police said.
