Rain Coming, Fires Quelled, Cheap Books

Your guide to what's happening in the community.

Good morning! Here’s a look at what’s happening along the north shore on Tuesday.

- Rain. After weather in the mid-90s recently, and humidity thick enough to cut a knife through the air with, we're finally expected to get a good rainfall today, hopefully dropping the humidity level the rest of the week along with it. Thunderstorms are likely after noon, bringing up to a half inch of rain.

- Speaking of the heat, fires don't stop for our local firefighters, who still have to strap on all their gear and bear high temps to make it out there – which they've had to do in recent days. In case you missed it, last Friday a Mt. Sinai home was zapped by lightning and caught aflame, and crews were back there again on Saturday morning. And Monday morning, Sound Beach and Rocky Point firefighters put out a fire behind a Sound Beach home.

- On that note, check out this article written last week by East Hampton Patch editor Taylor Vecsey on firefighters and the heat.

- Looking for something to do with the kids in this wet weather? The North Shore Library in Shoreham is holding its Crafty Tuesdays, 'Tic-Tac-Toe Ladybug' for 3-and-a-half year-olds through kindergarteners from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., and 'Time Capsule Decorating' for first and second graders at 1:15 p.m.

- Making plans for the weekend yet? Bea Ruberto gave us the skinny on the Fifth Annual Sound Beach Civic Association Food Fair & Chinese Auction coming up this Sunday at the Sound Beach fire house, from 4 to 8 p.m. Click here for details
